What Happens During a Root Canal?

Learning you need a root canal may cause you to feel apprehensive, especially if you’ve fallen victim to the myth that these procedures are “painful.” The good news is they are not; in fact, they are recommended because they allow us to remove the source of the pain – the infected or damaged pulp.

Our team will begin by making you comfortable with local anesthesia. This will numb your mouth so that you feel no pain throughout treatment. You can also inquire about receiving nitrous oxide should you need additional help to remain calm and relaxed.

After isolating the tooth so it will remain dry, we will enter through the top of the crown and begin cleaning out the decayed or diseased portions of the root canals and pulp chamber. Once the infected pulp is removed, we will sanitize the tooth and fill the area with a biocompatible solution known as gutta-percha. It ensures the tooth maintains its natural structure.

We will then apply a seal so that reinfection does not occur as well as a temporary crown. Within a few weeks, you will return to have your permanent restoration bonded into place.
